The work that happens before the work.

This week is National Surveyors Week, which is the perfect excuse to recognize a group of professionals who quietly make just about every infrastructure project possible.

Before a road is designed, before a utility is relocated, and definitely before construction equipment shows up, survey crews are usually the first people on site.

They’re out there gathering the data that engineers, designers, and contractors rely on to understand existing conditions and plan improvements. In other words—surveying is the work that happens before the work.

The Foundation of Every Infrastructure Project

If you’ve ever seen a survey tripod along the side of a road or out in a field, you’re seeing just a small piece of what the job involves.

Surveyors are responsible for measuring terrain, documenting property boundaries, locating utilities, and mapping the physical features engineers need to design infrastructure improvements.

It’s a mix of technology, precision, and a lot of time spent outdoors—sometimes in places that are muddy, wooded, or along busy roadways.

The information survey crews collect helps engineers design everything from roadway improvements to drainage systems and right-of-way plans. Without that data, infrastructure projects simply couldn’t move forward.

A Big Thank You to Our Survey Crews

At A&Z Engineering, our surveyors and field crews are often the first team members on site, collecting the information that helps move projects forward. Whether they’re working on transportation projects in Northwest Indiana and the greater Valparaiso area or supporting roadway and infrastructure improvements around Fort Wayne and throughout the state, their work lays the foundation for everything that follows.

Much of the transportation work we support also involves coordination with the Indiana Department of Transportation, where accurate survey data is essential for roadway design, right-of-way planning, and construction.

Surveying isn’t always the most visible part of a project—but it’s one of the most important.

So during National Surveyors Week, we’re taking a moment to say thanks to the professionals who help lay the groundwork for the infrastructure our communities rely on every day.
