Back to School Means Sharing the Road: A Reminder About School Bus Safety

With a new school year underway, it’s time to refresh an important topic: school bus safety. At A&Z Engineering, our work often puts us near school sites, crosswalks, and transportation corridors—and we know how crucial it is to keep students safe on their way to and from school.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), most school-age pedestrians involved in bus-related incidents are struck by motorists who fail to stop as required. These crashes are preventable.

What to Know as School Returns:

  • Always stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm—it’s the law.
  • Slow down in school zones and neighborhoods during pick-up and drop-off times.
  • Watch for students crossing streets near buses or waiting at corners—especially in the early morning hours or around 3:00–4:00 p.m.
  • Be mindful of new traffic patterns near schools due to construction, renovations, or changing bus routes.

Whether you’re commuting to work or navigating a school zone as part of a project, remember: back to school means more than new schedules—it’s also a renewed responsibility to share the road safely.
