Ludwig Road
Roadway and Trail Design
This project consisted of completely relocating Ludwig Rd. between Oakbrook Pkwy. and Coldwater Rd.
This included updating two intersections:
- New roundabout at the intersection of Oakbrook Pkwy. And Ludwig Rd.
- New signalized intersection at Coldwater Rd. and the newly constructed section of Oakbrook Pkwy.
The new road section is two-lane to three-lane where turn lanes are required.
Additional design elements include:
- Utility Coordination
- Addition of pedestrian pathway
- Curb and gutter with storm drainage
- Detention basin
- Utility duct bank
- Green infrastructure bio-swales
- Landscaping at the roundabout
- Street lighting
- Pavement markings
- Decorative retaining wall with railing for pedestrian/motorist safety
On top of design oversight, the project involved several traffic operational, safety, and access issues. Limiting the project’s impact to adjacent properties was challenging. The maintenance of traffic phasing scheme was developed to maintain two-way traffic throughout the duration of the project.
The project also requires INDOT permitting and coordination with INDOT I-69 interchange improvement project and the necessity for a limited access closure with a new limited access opening for the relocation intersection.
