During the past few weeks, A&Z Engineering’s Valparaiso Office Manager, Walter Evans, PE, hit the road for a cause that’s close to his heart: 4-H project judging. Walter visited county fairs across Indiana—reviewing youth entries in everything from electricity and woodworking to gardening and computer science.
In 2025 alone, he participated in project judging in DeKalb, Porter, Starke, LaGrange, Benton, and Lake Counties. And he’s no newcomer to the 4-H experience—Walter first joined as a mini 4-H member in 1973. He spent 10 years in the program as a youth and has now logged over 35 years as a judge. “Although I wasn’t a 4-H leader for 35 years like my dad, I feel like I owed it to 4-H for all of my successes,” he shared. “The 4-H mottos—Learn by Doing and Make the Best Better—are good words to live by.”
Among this year’s standout projects? A fifth-grade student’s detailed 3D-printed jet engine model, complete with tiny screws and a 34-hour print time. “You could tell he did it all himself,” Walter said. “It was impressive—and reminded me how far kids can go when they’re excited about learning.”
From supporting young engineers to encouraging creative problem-solving, Walter’s work with 4-H mirrors the spirit we value at A&Z: service, mentorship, and a drive to keep improving.
