Fort Wayne Advances Major Water Main Improvements to Support Lead Service Line Replacement

Project Spotlights

The City of Fort Wayne is advancing a significant water infrastructure improvement project focused on improving service reliability and supporting the replacement of aging lead water service lines—an important step in delivering cleaner, safer drinking water for residents.

This multi-tract project includes the installation of approximately 17,000 linear feet of HDPE water main using horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a trenchless construction method that minimizes surface disruption while allowing new infrastructure to be installed efficiently in established neighborhoods. The project also includes new hydrants, valves, and approximately 450 residential water service connections.

Construction is taking place in residential areas between St. Mary’s Avenue and Wells Street, where careful coordination is essential to maintain access, protect existing utilities, and minimize impacts to nearby homes.

A&Z Engineering is providing construction inspection services for the City of Fort Wayne, with inspectors assigned across multiple active tracts to support daily construction activities. Each inspector is responsible for monitoring installation methods, verifying materials, coordinating with contractors, and ensuring work complies with project plans, specifications, and applicable regulatory requirements.

A&Z inspectors are supervising multiple tracts, supporting HDD installation, water main connections, hydrant placement, and water service replacements within his assigned area. Trenchless techniques, along with split-pull service replacement methods, allow crews to replace lead service lines efficiently while reducing excavation and surface restoration in residential neighborhoods.

This project is part of the City of Fort Wayne’s broader effort to comply with lead service line replacement requirements in coordination with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, helping ensure long-term water quality and public health protection for the community.

Through consistent on-site inspection and modern construction methods, the City continues to invest in resilient infrastructure that supports safe drinking water, fire protection, and system performance—while remaining mindful of the neighborhoods served.

A&Z Engineering is proud to support the City of Fort Wayne on this important initiative through comprehensive Construction Inspection services.
