A winding tale that takes readers from coast to coast on one of America’s most well-known highways.

If you’re looking for a story that’s fast-moving but thoughtful—with just enough backstory and backroads to keep you hooked—this is a great read to round out your summer list.

I picked up The Lincoln Highway expecting a historical road trip—and while it delivered that, it was also something more: an adventure story with grit, charm, and a few detours that kept me guessing.

Set in 1950s America, the novel follows a group of teenagers on a cross-country journey that doesn’t go quite as planned. What stood out to me (aside from the brilliant writing) was how the story uses roads—literally and metaphorically—to explore choices, consequences, and the unexpected paths we take.

As someone who spends most of her day thinking and writing about infrastructure, it was refreshing to experience a story that celebrates this American highway in a very human way.

The Lincoln Highway itself may not be front and center, but the freedom of movement and transformation is woven into every chapter.

This book isn’t just entertaining—it’s layered, reflective, and full of energy. The characters are unpredictable, the structure is unconventional, and the ride is totally worth it.
