Construction Status for IPFW Pedestrian
Bridge

Below are some of the pictures of the progress for the IPFW
Pedestrian Bridge project. This page will be updated as often as
possible with new pictures and the project status. |

It's been a while since the last
update, and the bridge is almost a bridge. The first two
decking sections are up and poured on both the east and west sides,
and the third beam section is attached to the west side. This
week we should be seeing another beam section go up on the east
side. The piece to go up this week will be one of two
remaining sections that need to be placed. The final beam
section will be attached after final measurements, and the correct
shims can be added. This will most likely happen by the end of
the month, and hopefully a couple of nice days of weather will allow
the full deck to be poured.
Below are pictures of the work performed
since the last update. More pictures will be updated later
this week with decking and additional beam section.
Also thanks to Bob Addison of R.L. McCoy for these two aerial shots
of the bridge. |

After a couple of productive
days, the pylons are finally up in the air and secured. The pylons went up
on Wednesday after some initial struggles, and then the cables were
attached on Thursday. Final preparations are being made today for
the elevations on the steel and pylons, then metal decking will be
welded down. Before the decking is poured, the east side
pylons will be set. This is scheduled to take place next week
Wednesday, and should be finished up by Friday. The decking
will most likely be poured the following week, after the iron
workers have had time to place the decking and steel reinforcing in.
The bridge is still on schedule to be completed by next year, and
the structure itself should be fully erected by the time winter
rolls around. Concrete decking will most likely not be
finished by this year, but some of it will definitely be poured.
Below are pictures of the newly erected pylons and of work performed
since the last update. |

September is nearly over, and
progress has continued on the bridge. The second pier has been
finished, and the west side has seen a lot of steel. The
hangers on the west abutment are now in, and the final wall section
was poured. This means that the bridge is days away from
having the first set of pylons being set. This operation is
scheduled to happen on the 2nd of October (this Thursday), and will
most likely carry into Friday. On Thursday the pylons will be
set, and then on Friday a second section of still will be added.
This week should also see structural steel being placed on the east
side abutment and pier. The east side could possibly be see
the pylons being set by mid October, and then decking sometime
between October and November. Currently the bridge is on track
to have all the structural steel placed before the winter weather
shuts down the job site.

It's now September, and the
bridge is starting to really come together. The west side is
getting prepared to get the first section of structural steel, and
the first pylon is now delivered to the site. Next week this
steel will be placed, and then about 2 weeks from then the first
pylon will be seen in the air. This time line for the pylon
being erected is pure speculation currently, and they could
potentially be on the ground until next year. Next week should
also have the concrete pour for the second pier, bringing the east
side all that much closer to gearing up for structural steel.
Look for bridge decking to be poured in October, and again in
November.

August is winding down, and much
has been accomplished on both sides of the bridge. On the west side
the pier has been completely poured, and is awaiting the pylons and
structural steel. On the east side the abutment has been poured,
the walls have been poured, and the cofferdam is on its way to
completion. By the middle of next week it looks like the piling
should be installed in the pier, and the steel reinforcing should be
in place. This should place the footer being poured in the second
pier by the beginning of September, and then another couple of weeks
for the pier. Depending on the time the final wall section might be
going up on the abutments, and then not too long after that some
decking. This should happen sometime in September/October.

July has ended and McCoy is on
the other side of the river. The second abutment footer is
poured, and the wall section for the first pier is poured as of
today. Within the next week or so the wall for the second
abutment could possibly be poured as well. The causeway has
yet to be constructed, but should be placed within the next couple
weeks. McCoy looks to be on schedule, and by the end of the
construction season look for some bridge decking to be up. Below are pictures of work that has taken place. |

July is nearly over, and McCoy
continues to make progress on the IPFW pedestrian bridge. The
piling for the piers is in, and so is the pier footing.
Throughout this week the arch form will be installed, and then
perhaps by Friday another pour will take place. There's a lot
left to do on the west bank, but it might not be too long until the
work moves over to the east bank. With the weather still
cooperating perhaps some bridge decking could be seen going up in
the not too distant future. The causeway should be going in
the next couple of days/weeks, and with that boaters in the area
should be aware of the potential hazard. Below are pictures of work that has taken place. |
